Top podcast picks for kids and families (PART 3 OF 4)

Updated: Nov 1, 2020

The best information, inspiration, entertainment podcasts for the under-18s!

Welcome back to this continuing series of podcasts for kids!

In this part, it's all about the audio variety shows that can make things from road trips to long waits at restaurants more bearable, no screens required!

Here are some of my top picks in this category:

Ear Snacks

(Andrew & Polly)

This podcast is the brainchild of kid's indie (aka "kindie") rock artists Andrew and Polly.

I love this podcast because they go around and ask kids all sorts of questions on literally everything under the sun, from natural disasters to the late great RBG, and from favorite foods to favorite pajamas. And they even invite occasional guests such as Mindy Thomas of Wow in the World and Lee Overtree of the Story Pirates. Another fun part for me is that they do a special every year called the "Road Trip Mixtape" where they feature all these great kindie songs and also they recently did a special series highlighting the Grammy nominees in the Best Children's Album category.

This is a very good show, and it has almost everything that's fun.

If you love epic battles and showdowns between everything and anything, then this podcast is for you!

Originally a sub-segment of sister podcast Brains On, this really wholesome family-friendly debate show is just among the many audio variety shows out there.

The part that I really enjoy here is that different visiting guests, such as Lee Overtree and Peter McInerny of Story Pirates and the host of the Science, Vs. podcast and they pitch things in pop culture against each other, such as Vampires vs. Werewolves, Flowers vs. Rainbows, and Loki vs. Athena.

I really enjoy the fact that I learn new things with all they show off in this spectacular show. And speaking of learning, they also have this segment called State of Debate, where they show us how to debate smartly.

This is really gonna amaze you.

Dream Big

(Eva Karpman)

Feeling down lately? Need a little bit of inspiration?

Young journalist marvel Eva Karpman is to me, like the Michelle Obama but for the under 18s. She really goes at it at delivering all these quotes and inspiring ideas to help get through life and be a better version of yourself.

She also interviews top celebrities, athletes, and also inspirational figures to hear their secrets to being on the top, kinda like Guy Raz in her other podcast, How I Built This. Among the list of stars are Chris Colfer (star of Glee and writer of The Land of Stories), Ruby Rose Turner (of Disney Channel's Coop and Cami ask the World), and the late great NBA legend Kobe Bryant.

I enjoy taking all the values in this podcast and they make me look at the world and my life in a whole new light.

Tai Asks Why

(CBC Podcasts/PRX)

This is not your ordinary podcast about an ordinary kid,

This is about Canadian non-binary whiz kid Tai Poole and all the questions that run in her head.

In my perspective, this podcast really hits me at a very, very personal level. Why?

It's because I get to hear about her wondering about things like climate change and the the death of the dinosaurs and also on what makes the world go round.

She also gives time to interview the experts on how it all happened and why it matters for us to know about them.

It's a personally heartfelt show.
